Once the oldest family-run hotel on Calvi, Corsica’s sun-washed coastline, Hotel Corsica has been reborn as a refined retreat that balances heritage with contemporary elegance. Drawing on the region’s rugged palette of ochre earth, granite cliffs, and Mediterranean light, the redesign introduces sculptural forms and minimalist lines that feel at once timeless and unmistakably modern. This elevated vision aimed to lift the property beyond its former three-star impression and offer guests a sensorial journey that honours the island’s spirit.
Achieving that vision, however, demanded overcoming significant challenges. The 50-year-old building required structural upgrades, yet an off-season labour shortage made on-site work difficult, and during the COVID lockdowns, travel restrictions further complicated coordination. The design team also faced the task of expanding room offerings to suit families, couples, and long-stay visitors, all while preserving the hotel’s intimate charm and weaving local cultural references, such as the iconic Moor’s head, into every detail.
Solutions began with a full 3-D design delivery executed remotely, enabling contractors to tender and plan without stepping foot on the island. Layouts were re-imagined introducing detached villas, extended sea-view balconies, and cleverly connected rooms that adapt to diverse party sizes. Bathrooms received finely crafted finishes, while bespoke furnishings, fabrics, and fixtures were sourced, and price-locked, by the design team to streamline the client’s procurement process despite supply-chain volatility.
The results are already tangible: nightly rates have climbed, guest reviews praise the sense of understated opulence, and a second renovation phase is scheduled for 2025 to build on this momentum. From its earth-toned interiors to the subtle emblematic motifs, Hotel Corsica now invites travellers to experience the island’s natural beauty and cultural depth through a lens of modern luxury, proving that thoughtful design, clear storytelling, and strategic problem-solving can turn historic walls into a contemporary sanctuary.
