Lorena Gaxiola’s design philosophy embodies energy, emotion, and commercial creativity, resulting in bold, functional, and solution-based pieces. Her commitment to reuse, repurpose, multi-functionality, synergy, and connection shines through in her work.

“My approach to thinking is all about taking something ordinary and making it purposeful and meaningful.” From 2000 to 2005, financial challenges in the U.S. forced Gaxiola to design out of necessity, distancing her from her artistic roots. Her gift of mediumship allows her to deeply connect with the emotions of the spirit world. In 2006, a spiritual healer reignited her creative spark, encouraging her to design for self-discovery. Embracing originality brought self-doubt and fear, but also vulnerability and authenticity.

Her furniture series began with the Bling Bench, a simple, welcoming piece designed for versatility. Its adaptable proportions accommodate various materials, including upholstery, metal, timber, glass, and now, stone and porcelain for Melbourne Design Week 2024.

Since its 2007 debut at the Architectural Digest Show in NYC, the Bling Bench has maintained its original design, embodying modest and thoughtful craftsmanship. For MDW 2024, she introduces The Bling Console, an extension of the original bench.

The Lady Chair, a regal counterpart to La Chair (a playful nod to “La Silla” in Spanglish), reimagines the chair in porcelain for MDW 2024. This sculpture bridges culture and language, presenting “A Chair” in its ungendered essence.

Gaxiola views co-creation as an art form that weaves together resources, perspectives, and shared responsibilities. Her work explores design across diverse objects through collaborations, material explorations, and technological innovations. She champions sustainable and responsible design as a legacy ripe for reuse and reinvention.

“I equate furniture with sculpture as an art form with a unique sense of character made to be collected as well as used.”

– Lorena Gaxiola
