California Cool

Private Residential

Our client desired a home that would accommodate the needs of their family of five, serving as an area for hosting social events and gatherings with family and friends. Demonstrating modern architecture through vibrant colours and unique detailing yet unseen in California, with use of curated branded furniture and design pieces, seamlessly matches our client’s lifestyle as well as provide ample wall space for artwork display.

With a large extended family, this home needed to provide the perfect environment for hosting gatherings yet also allow their three teenage children enough space and privacy of their own. We thus created cozy nooks throughout the house that allowed everyone to study, socialize or just relax in comfort.

Most importantly, California is an area prone to earthquakes and requires greater consideration than standard constructions due to their vulnerability against shifting terrains and harsh environmental conditions. As a result, we had two objectives: firstly, to utilize the structural basement area and fit it out with a full-size squash court; and secondly, make use of industrial materials whilst maintaining an elegant and timeless design without succumbing to any fleeting trends.

Inside, the home is stylish but intimate, with Lorena refining each design choice to make sure that it didn’t overpower the space. The commanding 638sqm open plan home feels intimate due to the variety layers of textures and materials throughout. Ranging from the European white oak floors and custom-built sliding doors & windows in solid walnut by Boffi, to industrial concrete finishes complemented with metal works ties together the desired scheme.

The home site sits in steep terrain, providing superior resilience against earthquakes and is set up with fully automated, state-of-the-art smart home technological features. The goal was also for it to offer an inviting atmosphere, one that truly exposed and embraced by its natural environment. As a result, we delivered an interactive, functional, and livable dwelling from the inside out when viewed externally.
